Morning adventures around Villa Buena Onda (Sunup is roughly 5:30am year-round)
Beach Bound– It is 1.8 miles (2.9KM) of mostly flat terrain to get your feet wet. A nice walk or jog through town to the beach in the morning is a great way to start your day and see Coco as it wakes. A 3.6-mile round trip is perfect for most. For those fanatical fitness folks, you can always wear yourself out by exploring the town or beach more thoroughly. After 7am, there are plenty of places to stop for water or coffee along the way. It’s always best to travel in pairs and it is normal to encounter a stray dog (or chicken:) along the way.
Sidenote: For those of you who like a bloody, mimosa or margarita with your morning walk, El Capricho Mexican Restaurant (by the beach) opens at 9 a.m.
Look Out Climb-It is 1.06 miles (1,7KM) This seemingly short hike is for those who exercise regularly. It is very steep. Conquer this mini-mountain and your reward is a plateau above the Lookout restaurant with a view that you will remember. Bring your friends and cameras, you will earn that view! Typically, this is more than enough for travelers but there are trails around the top for those who have a whole other fitness gear. For this trip, please bring water with you (from the villa). The top of the mount is remote. Also, a hiking stick or two is available for those who would like it. We also encourage an early start to avoid the heavy heat.
Ocotal Cycle– It is 3.8Miles (6.1KM) and the terrain is mixed but very challenging on this trip. It’s a great mini adventure for bikes (or if you have a golf cart). The round-trip (7.2 miles) is not for casual walkers or runners. Ocotal is a peaceful remote little beach. It’s typically only the fitness crowd and the fishermen in the morning. After 11am, Father Rooster’s (beach bar) is open, which is a great place to be with good friends. It’s off the beaten path and very chill.
If you accomplish all three of the above during your stay, you will be an unofficial Tico Triathlete. That is something that no one can ever take away 🙂 For other fitness needs, please ask your Concierge. He can arrange for yoga, aerobics, dance, or other instructors to work out poolside at any time.
